JetBlue on track to become Boston’s biggest carrier

JetBlue Airways could carry up to five million passengers annually and become one of the largest airlines operating out of Boston’s Logan International Airport under a new expansion plan.

The aggressive airline is looking to occupy 11 gates by 2008, up from the two it now operates.

JetBlue plans to open five gates by May, then another gate every six months.

The goal: to have 100 daily flights out of Boston, up from the current 19 flights, said Founder David Neeleman.

Under that schedule, JetBlue would carry five million passengers a year by 2008 if all fights were nearly full.

That’s possible because JetBlue last year routinely filled 83% of its available seats, according to airline statistics.

American Airlines, Boston’s largest carrier, had about five million passengers last year, according to the company.

“We knew that JetBlue had growth potential, but we had no idea how much,” said Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

The discount carrier, which offers frills like leather seats and in-seat satellite television, already flies from Boston to California, Colorado and Florida.

The airline also plans to add routes to Las Vegas and San Jose, California starting May 3.

”JetBlue’s expansion could squeeze traditional carriers flying out of Logan including Delta Air Lines,” said AirWise News.
