Jets narrrowly avoid collision at JFK

A major runway collision was averted at the last minute at New York’s JFK after a plane crossed a runway without warning.

JetBlue flight 1295 had to abort its take off suddenly after a Caribbean Airways jet crossed the runaway without authorization on Saturday, according to JetBlue officials.

It is unclear how close to a collision the two jets were, but the JetBlue pilot reportedly had to take evasive action and slam on the emergency brakes.

No injuries were reported but the flight had to return to the gate and was then delayed for three hours before taking off without incident.

JetBlue spokesperson Rick Clark said flight 1295 had reached full take off speed when the CAL plane was spotted on the runway.

According to Eyewitness News in New York the CAL pilot was on the wrong frequency and never heard repeated calls from air traffic control to stop before reaching the runway.

"It’s about as bad as it can get without having two planes collide," former pilot Bob Ober said.

"In just a matter of two to three seconds, that plane would have been at a speed where it could not have stopped," he said.
