Jetstar facing restrictions on Honolulu route

Saturday, 09 Aug, 2006 0

Jetstar may be restricted in its plan to fly to Honolulu under existing government air services policies, it has been reported.

The US-Australian bilateral air services agreement provides for only four services per week to be flown on the route by a new Australian carrier, contrary to Jetstar’s plans for five services, according to a report in The Australian.

Jetstar wants to fly five services a week to Honolulu from December – three services from Sydney and two from Melbourne. But the airline was unable to announce its Honolulu fare level along with its other planned international routes last week.

United Airlines has told US decision makers that “anti competitive limitations” put in place by the Australian Government and supported by (Jetstar owner) Qantas had created the situation Jetstar faces.

“It would be unfair to US carriers and inconsistent with a sound aviation policy to allow Australian carriers to deviate from agreed capacity limits when Australia has not allowed US carriers to do so,” it said.

United said the situation should be used by the US to lobby for an open skies arrangement between the two countries, according to the report.

The US will almost certainly require at least a compromise from which its own carriers can also benefit, the paper said
