Jetstar International no frills service

The new Jetstar International service will be a no-frills “pay as you go” offering with fare-inclusive meals off the table. Passengers will have to upgrade to premium economy “Starclass” will get the feed that has become a norm on international travel. Economy passengers will have to buy their food on the plane or pre-purchase it via the airline’s website.

Passengers will also be expected to dig into their pockets for drinks and on-board entertainment.

Jetstar chief executive Alan Joyce said the airline’s research showed savvy travellers were prepared to pay for food and drinks to get the lowest possible ticket prices.

“People will see the type of low fares internationally that I think we’ve become famous for domestically,” he said.

Routes will be announced in the middle of next year but destinations already flagged as possibilities include Seoul, Taipei and Phuket. Qantas services on low-yielding routes such as Honolulu and Manila are also tipped to become Jetstar International routes.
