Jetstar targets Tasmania

Friday, 19 Dec, 2005 0

The Tasmanian State Opposition yesterday joined forces with travel agents, urging the State Government to “come clean” on its stance over the Jetstar proposal for Australia Post offices to sell airline tickets.

Deputy Liberal leader Will Hodgman said allowing post offices to sell airline tickets would create an unfair and uncompetitive environment for Tasmania’s licensed travel agents.

Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway said the TCF was to guarantee the safety of customer’s money while ticket transactions were being processed. The Australia Post transaction would be instant and on site, so there was no risk.

Mr Westaway said the Jetstar plan, which the airline had been working on for the past year, would benefit Tasmania by allowing more people to buy tickets — especially those without access to the internet or people without credit cards.

Australia Post said it was not intending to replace the role of a travel agent but simply allow people in remote areas to buy discount airline tickets. Please!

Tasmania recently created uproar in the racing industry by granting UK firm Betfair a licence to operate when all other State Governments listened to the advice of the industry and its ruling body and refused. Seems the same divide and conquer approach is at play here.
