Jetstar wants fixed taxi fares between Avalon and Melbourne
A report in the Geelong Advertiser says that Jetstar wants taxis to run on fixed fares between Avalon Airport and central Melbourne.
Airline chiefs see nothing but growth in their business customer market and believe patrons heading for the city need a consistent measure of how much trips will cost them.
Jetstar corporate relations manager Simon Westaway has raised the proposal with Industry and State Development Minister Theo Theophanous, adding, “The State Government needs to think about its medium to long-term vision on how taxis service Avalon.”
“We are a major user of the airport and the taxi industry continues to benefit from infrastructure growth, it’s time we got some activity in terms of a forward approach.”
“Because of the distance between Avalon and central Melbourne we think there should be a flat fare which provides a return on capital invested by the driver of the cab.”
Drivers are also restricted in collecting customers, with Avalon within Geelong’s taxi zone which means only Geelong operators can collect people off the rank.
Metropolitan drivers can drive people to the airport but are only allowed to pick up pre-booked fares.
Geelong drivers can’t collect fares in Melbourne.
Victorian Taxi Directorate spokesman Robert Gill said the directorate had full confidence in standard hiring charges.
Jetstar estimates one in five people pass through Avalon on business trips and the market has grown with increased scheduling of flights to and from Sydney.
“More and more people are using Avalon,” Mr Westaway said. “We’re going to be putting more flights in and there comes a time when overall support from the taxi sector needs to grow.”
“Regulatory issues and customer service issues could be improved.”
