JFK Airport hotel fined for price gouging

A hotel at New York’s JFK Airport has been hit with a fine for price gouging customers during a winter storm in January 2016.
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman said The Courtyard by Marriott New York JFK Airport Hotel gouged guests out of $48,000 for heavily inflated room rates.
Over a four-day period hiked prices by 45-75%, Schneiderman said.
The hotel has agreed to make restitution for the $48,000 and pay a $17,000 civil fine.
"The Courtyard by Marriott took advantage of hundreds of stranded people who were simply seeking the safety of shelter during and after this massive blizzard," Schneiderman said.
"This settlement holds the hotel accountable for these actions and prohibits it from happening again."
He cited one guest who paid out $499 for a room that cost $154 on the same day of the week before.
