Joburg musos scoop MAMAs
The first MTV Africa Music Awards, or MAMAs, took place at the Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on Saturday night, 22 November – and two Joburg bands walked away with top honours.
Seether, formed as Saron Gas in Johannesburg in 1999, won Best Alternative Band. Today the band is a worldwide hit, having relocated to the United States. The energetic hip-hop group, Jozi, won Best Live Performer, beating bands from across the continent.
Nigerian D’Banj took home the most MAMA golden microphones – for Best Male Artist, for Artist of the Year, and for Listeners’ Choice. Sponsored by Kuwaiti cellphone network operator Zain, the MAMAs was conceived as the ultimate celebration of African contemporary music and talent.
The most poignant moment of the entire event came on the awards night, when MTV paid tribute to two Africa’s most loved and influential musicians – Miriam Makeba, “Mama Africa”, and Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose seminal track, Army Arrangement, was performed by his youngest son, Seun Anikulapo Kuti and Fela’s band Egypt 80.
Seun Kuti then accepted the inaugural MAMA Legend Award in honour of his late father.
Performers at the MAMA awards ceremony included 9ice, Asa, Cassette, Seun Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80, HHP, Jozi, P Squared, Kelly Rowland, D’Banj, Flo Rida, The Game, Jua Naeto C and Ikechukwu
