Kenya beach hotels closed after huge fire
Three beach hotels in Mombasa are understood to be closed following a devastating fire that raised at least 82 tourist bungalows to the ground.
More than 50 tourists had to be evacuated from the Neptune Palm Beach hotel when a fire started in one of the bungalows, according to local reports. The fire then spread to two sister properties nearby.
The worst of the damage is understood to be at the Neptune Paradise Beach hotel in Mombasa, where, according to local news reports, 82 thatched bungalows burned to the ground.
The other hotel affected was the Neptune Village. All three hotels are owned by the Neptune hotel group.
The fire is said to have started around 5:30pm onTuesday at one of the bungalows at Palm Beach, the only one of the three hotels which was occupied by guests at the time. It then travelled to other hotels in the chain.
Strong winds fanned the flames, which also spread to private bungalows and homes, destroying 26 properties within a two kilometer stretch, said Kenya’s Citizen TV.
No casualties were reported and . The cause of the fire is, as yet, unknown.
