Kenya tourist chiefs condemn grenade attack
Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism has issued a statement following a grenade attack in a tourist resort south of Mombasa which injured 10 people.
A grenade was thrown into the Tanduri Bar in Diani, full of New Year revellers, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The injured were taken to hospital and four have since been discharged. No tourists were among those hurt.
Phyllis Kandie, cabinet secretary for East African Affairs Commerce and Tourism, strongly condemned the attack.
But she said the festive period had been a peaceful one thanks to the government’s efforts to step up security in and around tourist hotels and facilities.
She urged visitors to carry on with their travel plans and said the area is calm.
No-one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but it follows others blamed by the Kenyan Government on Islamist militants.
In September, gunmen stormed into a shopping centre in the country’s capital, Nairobi, killing at least 67 civilians.
Last month, two British tourists driving between Diani and Mombassa escaped unharmed when a grenade thrown at their car failed to explode.
