Kidnappings on upswing in Haiti

Saturday, 08 Aug, 2006 0

Upwards of 80 Americans have been kidnapped in Haiti in the past year, the New York Daily News reported.

There were also four cases of individuals murdered by thugs seeking ransom payoffs.

The victims were seized from cars, homes and even ripped from their beds.

US officials said 800 people, mostly Haitians, were kidnapped.

Most of the kidnapped Americans were released, said the FBI.

None of the kidnapped victims were taken for political reasons.

FBI officials advised visitors not to attract attention.

The rise in kidnappings started last year when corrupt police realized Haiti’s government and the UN were not going to get rid of them, Mark Schneider, a Haiti expert at the International Crisis Group, told the News.
