KLIA partners with SITA for fast track ‘single token’ airport journey

Sunday, 02 Feb, 2020 0

Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport has tapped the latest facial recognition tech to provide a seamless curb to gate passenger journey.

The airport is working with airport tech provider SITA and Malaysia Airlines on the three-month pilot scheme.

It offers one-time identification verification for pasengers which allows them through all airport touchpoints from check-in to boarding using their face as their passport and boarding pass.

It is being tested on Malaysia Airlines’ Japan departures to Tokyo Narita and Osaka.

Facial recognition scanners have been installed at check-in counters, and compatible e-gates are placed at security screening and at the boarding gates.

The ‘single token journey’ concept allows speedier access where a passport or boarding pass is usually required to be shown.

Travellers only need to scan their faces to verify their ‘token’ at all the touchpoints.

"Harnessing technology is one way we can simplify airport processes for our guests. This initiative is especially timely in view of Visit Malaysia 2020.  We expect to have a successful pilot so that we can implement this in totality at KUL," said acting group chief executive officer of Malaysia Airports, Dato’ Mohd Shukrie Mohd Salleh.

Sumesh Patel, SITA president Asia Pacific, said: We look forward to working with Malaysia Airports and Malaysia Airlines to deliver an elevated customer experience through this new biometric technology."
