Knife find disrupts airport
A report in the Herald Sun says that a knife has been found wedged between two seats in the Virgin Blue passenger terminal at Melbourne airport, with the potential weapon found beyond the X-ray and metal-detecting screening point about 5.40pm on Friday.
It was not known how long it had been there.
Melbourne Airport spokesman Tom Perry said the discovery caused half-hour delays to up to four flights, adding, “The prohibited item was found after the screening point in the Virgin Blue area of terminal three”, adding, “As a precaution the terminal was cleared and the the response was textbook”.
Virgin Blue’s Amanda Bolger said Federal Police agents were notified, the terminal was cleared and all awaiting passengers were re-screened, adding, “The Federal Police deemed it was a non-threat but erred on the side of caution.”
A Federal Police spokesman last night said AFP agents helped remove people from the discovery area, adding, “The AFP conducted a search of the area and assessed the area to be safe”.
The spokesman could not give details on the size or type of knife.
