Lake District pub scoops best newcomer award
When Lucy and Mark Fuller made a flying visit to Kirkby Lonsdale to buy some cheese for their wedding, the last thing they expected to purchase was a pub…
The Sun Inn, a 17th century inn in the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale, was up for sale when Lucy and Mark called at the town to visit the Churchmouse Cheeses shop just next door. After popping in for a drink they fell in love with the old beams, oak floors and real fires of the run-down pub and quickly put in an offer to buy it.
Initially they were turned down, but they persisted and twelve months later in March 2006 they were finally handed the keys. And so began their labour of love…
The Sun needed a new roof, complete refitting of eleven bedrooms and bathrooms plus a complete overhaul of the bar and restaurant.
After 18 months they established a inn which offers a contemporary restaurant complete with Wine Library, as well as rooms with fluffy duvets, sparkling bathrooms and luxurious toiletries.
And their efforts have now been rewarded as they have just won the Lancashire and Lake District Life’s Newcomer of the Year Award, beating off stiff competition from some well-respected names in the industry.
“We are so proud to have won this award and to have created a place that our customers really enjoy” says Lucy Fuller.
“Kirkby Lonsdale is a great place to visit and it really deserved a luxurious inn to complement the fabulous shops. We’re now an award winning street in Kirkby Lonsdale, with the Cheese Shop of the Year, the North West Sausage Champion and ourselves!”
