Latest: Australians flown home by RAAF

Monday, 24 Feb, 2011 0

Ninety-one Australians have flown home from Christchurch on a Royal Australian Air force plane, and 26 Singapore citizens have been flown home by the Royal Singapore Air Force.

Some
116 Singapore Army personnel who happened to be in New Zealand for an exercise are helping out in Christchurch, mainly manning the cordons in the CBD.

Cunard’s biggest ship, the Queen Mary 2, is to visit Wellington for the first time after cancelling its visit to Christchurch in the wake of the earthquake.

A Cunard spokesman said the vessel will not be calling to Christchurch’s port of Lyttelton as scheduled on Saturday, and will stop at Wellington instead.

Air New Zealand has extended its NZ$50 one-way airfares from/to Christchurch anywhere on the Air New Zealand domestic network for booking and travel through until midnight Sunday, February 27.

Compassionate international fares will also continue to be available.

Air NZ is also operating additional services to and from Christchurch.

A state of national emergency is expected to last for seven days at this stage.

Travellers intending to travel to or from the Christchurch area over the next week are advised to avoid any non-essential travel.

Travellers with a trip planned to the Christchurch beyond March 2 should check with their airline or travel agent and keep watch of key websites.

International and domestic flights are arriving and departing from Christchurch airport. Roads are open from Christchurch airport connecting the area with other locations in the South Island.

Highways connecting with other parts of New Zealand are open apart from the Lyttelton Tunnel and State Highway 74.

TransAlpine and TranzCoastal rail services are cancelled and are expected to resume on March 1. Disrupted passengers or those with queries should call KiwiRail for alternative travel arrangements on 0800 808 400.
