Latin America heralds ‘big step’ as Uruguay joins Chile on safe list
Latin America has taken another ‘big step’ towards a tourism recovery after Uruguay joined Chile on the UK’s travel corridor, according to the boss of the Latin American Travel Association.
While South America’s second smallest country retains entry restrictions for foreign nationals, LATA Chief Executive Danny Callaghan said the UK decision illustrates that Latin America is getting Covid under control.
"Uruguay’s addition to the UK travel corridors list is another big step in the right direction for Latin America’s tourism recovery with Chile having made the list in the British government’s announcement last week," he said.
"News such as this instils great confidence in us and our members that a recovery is on the horizon and that we will once again be able to welcome British tourists in 2021 after what has been a torrid year for the global travel industry.
"We remain confident that we will see more countries joining the list."
With Chile added to the safe travel list last week the perception is growing that the continent was managing Covid and becoming a ‘safe and secure visitor destination’, he said.
Uruguay was also included in the European Union’s list of safe countries in June which further demonstrates the nation’s health record, Callaghan said.
"There are at present no direct flights to Uruguay from the UK however it is important to note that Uruguay is a piece of a much larger puzzle.
"LATA is delighted to see this trend towards Latin American destinations being deemed safe by the British authorities and hopes for the trend to continue.
"We highlighted last week that many other destinations in Latin America have similar and, indeed in some cases, lower infection rates than Uruguay and Chile so we remain confident that we will see more countries joining the list. "
