Legal challenge filed against Gatwick second runway plan
A legal challenge against plans for full use of London Gatwick’s second runway has been filed in the High Court.
Bringing it into full use will potentially add about 100,000 more flights a year.
The £2.2 billion project will see the runway moved by a few metres allowing for round the clock use of narrow body flights,
The privately funded project was given the go-ahead a few weeks ago,
Communities against Gatwick Noise Emissions (Cagne) is fighting to get it blocked.
It says climate change impacts have not been fully assessed,
“It is absolutely shameful that residents are forced to take legal action to hold a government to account,” said Sally Pavey, chairwoman of Cagne
“Months were spent examining the Gatwick submissions and yet a government can just ignore the outcome for refusal and grant unsustainable growth at any price to the local environment.”
“To build a brighter future you must look to what is sustainable, to what legacy we wish to leave future generations.”
“After calling on the Transport Secretary to revoke development consent in a pre-action letter, Cagne is now pursuing a judicial review challenge,” the group’s legal team said.
A London Gatwick spokesperson said: “We are aware that a claim for judicial review has been lodged. We intend to participate in the proceedings as an interested party.”
