Legendary Raffles enters Caribbean market
Raffles International’s first venture in the Caribbean opened just before Thanksgiving at the luxurious Raffles Resort Canouan Island.
The 300-acre property is on Canouan Island in the heart of the Grenadines in the southeastern Caribbean. Raffles is part of a 1,200-acre private estate with three secluded sand beaches, all surrounded by one of the world’s largest coral reefs.
The new Raffles Resort is set in a protected bay with each of the 156 single and double-story luxury villas offering attractive views.
Facilities include the RafflesAmrita Spa with nine individual treatment rooms set on a hillside overlooking one of the resort’s beaches. The resort’s amenities include an 18-hole Jim Fazio-designed Trump International Golf Club, and a European-style gaming casino.
Amenities also include a fitness center, a boxing ring, and a kids program called the “Sugar Palm Club.
The Raffles tradition began over a century ago, with the opening of the widely-known Raffles Hotel in Singapore.
Raffles International was formed in 1989 to restore, redevelop and manage the world-famous Raffles Hotel, according to officials of the Singapore-based company. The company also embarked on an expansion move.
The acquisition of L’Ermitage Beverly Hills in 2000 marked Raffles International’s entry to North America. Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills is located on Burton Way, where a rooftop swimming pool has a panoramic view of the surrounding city.
By 2001, Raffles Holdings had expanded to 38 hotels in 33 destinations.
