Leiria, Central Portugal, set to welcome its first five-star hotel
Leiria in Central Portugal is a major destination in the country. The historic city lies just 30 km from the renowned pilgrimage site of Fatima and 150 km north of Lisbon.
Leiria will be the site of the city’s first five-star hotel, following a €15 million investment. The new infrastructure represents a major milestone for the central Portuguese city’s tourism and business sectors. The property, Hotel Lis Garden, will feature 100 rooms. The completion of the hotel is due to happen in summer 2027.
The project is led by entrepreneur José Frazão, owner of the Hotel Lis brand, which already operates hotels in Batalha and Lisbon. Speaking to Lusa news agency, Frazão confirmed the new venture will be his first five-star establishment and the first of its kind in Leiria.
The hotel will rise near the Polis trail, a prime location in the city. It aims to strengthen Leiria’s appeal on both the national and international tourism maps.
In addition to the hotel, the project includes a 7,500-square-meter event center capable of hosting up to 450 guests, with multiple meeting and training rooms. Supported by Compete 2030 (an economic partnership between the European Union and Portugal) and Turismo de Portugal, the investment is positioned as a catalyst for economic development in the Central region.

The facility will offer fully equipped, ready-to-use infrastructure for corporate events, exhibitions and conferences.
Frazão highlighted the strategic importance of business tourism for the region. “It’s a real opportunity to diversify the local economy and reduce seasonality,” he highlighted. He also described the project as a springboard for sustainable regional growth.
