Less than four weeks to the start of winter at Falls Creek

Friday, 15 May, 2007 0

With less than four weeks to the start of winter it is reassuring to read the weather columns continually stating the so called El Nino pattern has broken down.

The other good weather-related news for skiers and boarders is in the mild weather we’ve been enjoying is about to change.

In the past the demise of the El Nino event at this time of the year has resulted in the southeast of the country has had a wetter than usual late
autumn and winter.

The National Climate Centre is tipping solid rain (normally falling as snow at higher elevations) particularly in relation to the arrival of La Nina, the opposite of El Nino.

What is significant about La Nina? It is a more snow-friendly weather system which climatologists are forecasting could end the drought by August.

Coupled with all international models showing a further cooling of the equatorial Pacific Ocean over the next few months, the forecast of a serious La Nina weather phenomenon is sound.

Everyone associated with snow-related businesses at picture-postcard Falls Creek are quite optimistic. The prospect of Mother Nature being much more cooperative this winter (than the last one) is the ideal reseason scenario.

Falls Creek Ski Lifts is currently completing extensive upgrading of its snowmaking capability. This will, in tandem with Mother Nature, enhance the snow cover on its most popular skiing and boarding terrain.

It also offers numerous value-for-money ski lift & ski lesson packages or newcomers to a very exciting winter recreation.

For example a two hour session with a Snowsports School instructor and selected beginner-friendly ski lifts (moving carpets) only costs Au$61 (Au$41 for a child). That could prove to be a significant investment! Learning the fundamentals of skiing, or snow boarding, from a pro removes the angst from what is perceived (incorrectly) to be a very difficult sport to learn.

A 3 day/3 night Snowtime Intro package, including snow equipment suitable clothing, three days’ Learn to Ski or Board Pass and three nights in a self-contained apartment, is also a good investment.

This is a low-cost family-friendly winter holiday (from Au$619 for an adult and Au$446 per child) which could ingnite a long-term interest in going to the snow.
