Little Bali Hotel and Rerort Company offers ‘Nyepi’ hotel specials

Offering a huge incentive to visit Bali during the ‘Nyepi Festival’ (16-20 March) all Little Bali Hotel & Resort Company (LBHRC) members are offering special accommodation rates, many of them inclusive of meals and other value added extras,  throughout the festival period and beyond to 31 March.

The rates, which include a $99 per person twin share for 10 nights with breakfast at the Puri Etnik Hotel in Legian, can all be viewed at www.thelittlebalihotelresortcompany.com.

The ‘Nyepi Festival’ is one of the world’s oldest and most important Hindu religious ceremonies and provides visitors with one of the best opportunities to see the ‘Morning of the world’ in full festival mode.

The event also marks the start of 1929 for the Balinese who traditionally record the passing of time with the Saka lunar calendar first introduced in 465 AD.

The Saka calendar is actually 78 years behind the Gregorian calendar.Celebrations start on 16 March when huge processions of Balinese people from all walks of life carry temple effigies and other sacred symbols to the beaches to perform cleansing rituals known as ‘Melasti’.

This is followed over the next two days by ‘Tawur Kesnaga’ and ‘Caru’ temple rituals when chickens, ducks, goats, even cows and bulls, are sacrificed to the Hindu gods.

The highlight of the entire festival is the colourful exorcism rituals taking place on 18 March at the crossroads of every town and village in Bali when massive effigies symbolising demons and spirits, the ‘Ogoh-ogoh’, are paraded on the crossroads of every town and village.

This is followed by ‘Nyepi’, the Day of Silence when the island will fall into complete inactivity for 24 hours from 6.00 AM, the main intention being to trick spirits and demons into thinking that everyone has left the island – so they might as well leave too!

The ‘Nyepi Day’ observations are strict. No entertainment is permitted, lights and fires are banned, nobody is allowed to travel and tourists have to stay inside their hotels for the 24 hour period.

Denpasar International Airport is also closed to all air traffic.

Normal life promptly resumes at 6.00 AM on 20 March when the Balinese emerge from their homes to welcome in the ‘demon free’ new year with feasting, singing and dancing.
