Little heard of ski resort becomes third most popular
You might never have heard of the Polish ski resort Zakopane and you probably don’t know how to pronounce it (don’t ask us), but it is the third most popular winter sports destinations for Britons, according to a survey hotel search website Trivago.
Zakopane didn’t feature in the top 25 last year but Trivago said its hosting of the Ski Jumping World Cup might have pushed it into third place.
"With prices in Polish and Bulgarian ski resorts significantly cheaper than their French and Austrian counterparts, and hotel quality equally strong, resorts such as Zakopane could present a good value alternative," said a Trivago spokeswoman.
However it should be noted that Zakopane has just four runs and three lifts, making it only an option for beginner or (very) short breaks.
Morzine in the French Portes du Soleil ski region knocked nearby Chamonix into second place this year, while high altitude Val Thorens in France and St Anton in Austria came in fourth and fifth respectively.
Courchevel was the most expensive resort, where rooms cost an average of £298 a night, while Bansko in Bulgaria was the cheapest at £52 a night.
Ischgl in Austria had the best-rated hotels, while Pas de la Casa in duty-free Andorra had the worst.
