Livingstone seeks industry help
London mayor Ken Livingstone is asking the industry to support a multi-million pound tourism plan for the capital.
Livingstone has launched a three-year strategy, Visit London, to improve leadership funding and the structure of London’s tourism. He has recruited British Airways chairman Lord Marshall and London Tourist Board chairwoman Tamara Ingram to help him.
Some £4 million has been earmarked for the plan, on top of the £3 million already put aside for improving tourism this year and Livingstone wants the industry to contribute.
“With growing competition from around the world London can no longer afford to take its status for granted,’ said Livingstone. ‘We could do much better but for too long the tourist industry has lacked sufficient Government support and a sense of strategic direction.”
Meanwhile, the British Incoming Tour Operators Association has started looking for a replacement for chief executive Richard Tobias. He steps down in February.
