London expects quick recovery from nights of rioting
As England cleans up after this week’s street riots and looting, tourism authorities are doing their best to play down the impact of the violence on visitors to the UK, most especially for next year’s Olympic Games.
If damage remains outside key tourist areas, the European Tour Operators Association said it expects little long-term impact on London tourism.
“Past experience tells us that London recovers very quickly from such events and we will focus on recovery activity as soon as it is viable to do so,” London & Partners said in a statement.
Visit London says it was too early to anticipate the effect the violence will have on visitor numbers but said it was monitoring the situation closely.
Several countries have issued travel warnings in the wake of the riots which have received extensive and graphic media coverage around the world.
European Tour Operators Association executive director Tom Jenkins said, “British people won’t be put off from visiting the Olympics in Stratford because a year earlier someone broke shop windows in Hackney.â€
