Low cost pioneer PEOPLExpress takes flight again
The long awaited revival of PEOPLExpress is a reality, following the announcement of air services from Newport News/Williamsburg airport in Virginia to Boston, Newark, NJ, and Pittsburgh.
Flights begin June 30 with further destinations added over the summer.
Flights to West Palm Beach, Florida will start July 15, followed by Atlanta August 1, and St. Petersburg, Florida and New Orleans on August 28.
Tickets for all destinations will go on sale on June 4.
PEOPLExpress was a much loved low cost carrier operating in the earlier 1980s before being acquired by Continental which was itself taken over by United Airlines.
"Other than the name there is no affiliation, however a number of our employees previously worked for the old PEOPLExpress," said CEO Jeff Erickson.
The fledgling airline is still awaiting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and will use 150-seat Boeing 737-400s operated by partner Las Vegas-based Vision Airlines for the first year.
Erickson said the airline will focus on underserved routes.
"With the exception of the service from here to Atlanta everything else has no nonstop competition," he said.
Introductory fares are being offered starting at $76 but like most of its rivals in the low-cost market, it will charge extra for checked and overhead bags.
Its operational base is at Newport News-Williamsburg, and future hubs are planned for Pittsburgh, San Antonio, New Orleans, and Atlantic City.
