Lufthansa told off about misleading advert
A complaint by EasyJet against rival airline Lufthansa has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority.
EasyJet complained about a press advert by the German airline in April and May this year, which stated: "Europe one way from £59*. Book online. All inclusive, no hidden taxes."
The asterisk linked to small print running vertically up the side of the ad which stated: "Economy Class one-way fare to selected German destinations, including taxes, fees and charges. For other European destinations, please check the respective fares and conditions on lufthansa.com. Some payment methods are subject to a handling fee."
EasyJet challenged the ad on two counts: the availability of flights to Europe at the advertised price of £59; and whether the ad was misleading because it did not state the departure and destination points and the travel period relevant to the quoted fare.
The ASA upheld the complaint and ordered Lufthansa to ensure it "held data demonstrating sufficient levels of availability for advertised fares on each qualifying route, and to make clear any significant travel periods for which availability was limited," in future campaigns.
Meanwhile, a complaint by a member of the public about a TV advert by Chessington World of Adventures has been dismissed.
A TV ad for a ride at the theme park showed two children waking up in bunk beds in the middle of the African plain before running and getting into a truck.
A dramatic voice-over stated "Chessington World of Adventures presents, new for 2013, a ride into the wild. ZUFARI".
The truck was shown driving past some zebras, a giraffe, some antelopes and a rhino in their natural habitat.
The complainant challenged whether the ad was misleading because it could lead to children having unrealistic expectations of the experience of the ride.
The ASA did not uphold the complaint.
