Luton Airport fire: Cars ‘unlikely to be salvageable’

London Luton Airport has said all vehicles in the car park during last week’s huge fire are likely to be ‘unsalvageable.’

It says up to 1,500 cars were parked their when fire swept through the multi-storey car park.

The blaze ripped through the building late last Tuesday with more than 100 firefighters sent to fight the fire.

It led to a partial collapse of the facility and major disruption for thousands of passengers.

LLA said it is ‘unlikely that any vehicles in the car park will be salvageable.’

“We recognise this has been an extremely distressing time for all concerned and we would like to thank our customers for their ongoing patience.”

Some arriving passengers said they were ‘left in limbo’ with very little assistance.

Some were left stranded at the airport with no transport options.

The airport’s Dart rail transit system still remains closed.

“We are working with the Association of British Insurers on behalf of the many insurance companies to establish whether it will be possible to safely retrieve any personal possessions,” the airport added.

“Our team have been tirelessly working around the clock to keep customers informed.”
