Major hotel chains reconsidering free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi at your hotel? Whoops, maybe not.

The US’s biggest hotel chains have been quick to respond to the overwhelmingly popular free Wi-Fi move but some are not reconsidering. The reason for adding charges: the immense popularity of the move.

"No chain that includes (free) Internet access in its room rate has pulled back but some are giving customers the option of paying extra for upgraded bandwidth so they don’t get frustrated by sluggish speeds," says USA Today.

Surveys have repeatedly shown that free Internet access ranks toward the top of guests’ want lists from hotels, As a result, hotels have been buying up more bandwidth, according to Dave Garrison, CEO of iBahn, which is one of the world’s top hotel internet providers.

The most likely future outcome: Hotels already offering free Wi-Fi will provide added services such as faster service at premium prices.
