Majority of MPs say air tax is damaging economy

More than half of Conservative MPs believe an APD reduction should be considered and half of all MPs believe the tax is damaging the economy.

61% of Tory MPs believe a reduction should be considered to stimulate growth according to a new survey published today by ABTA, with 57% believing APD is damaging the economy.  51% of all MPs believe a reduction could increase the competitiveness of the UK economy.

The research comes as more than 250,000 emails have been sent to MPs asking for a review on the impact of current APD levels. 96 MPs have also backed the Fair Tax on Flying campaign.

Mark Tanzer, CEO of ABTA, said: " The very fact that half of MPs believe current rates of APD are damaging the economy is a clear indication we need a review into the impacts of this tax before it does any further damage.

"Other governments, such as the Dutch, abolished the tax after a review found that the revenue raised was outweighed by the revenue lost."
