Malaysia Airlines flight makes emergency landing
A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane made an emergency landing in Australia after reporting a possible engine fire.
Flight MH148, carry 279 passengers and 13 crew, had just taken off from Melbourne for the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur when the crew declared an emergency.
It landed safely back on the runway at Tullamarine Airport 35 minutes after it left.
An examination of the aircraft revealed ‘no physical evidence of fire externally’.
A spokeswoman for Airservices Australia, the government’s aviation safety body, told Reuters that the plane had reported an ‘engine fire’ alert in the cabin.
She said: "The plane proceeded to dump the fuel and returned to land and it landed safely at the aviation rescue sites. Officials said this was standard procedure for an emergency landing.
A statement from the airline said: "A preliminary inspection of the plane, which has been grounded, showed ‘no physical evidence of fire externally’.
It added: "Safety is our utmost priority."
