Malaysia considers Al Quran theme park
A Malaysian politician has mooted the idea of building an Al Quran theme park to attract tourists and serve to promote learning of the holy book.
"In Malaysia, we already have Legoland and water theme parks like Sunway and the time has come for us to bring the world’s population to Malaysia to learn the Al Quran in the form of an Al Quran theme park in Malaysia," MP Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said during a debate on the 2015 budget allocation.
An original plan was to allocate RM30 million ($9 million ) to build the world’s second-largest printing centre with capacity to print up to one million copies of the holy scripture each year.
However the PAS party member’s proposal is an altogether more ambitious project.
"I propose that this Al Quran theme park be divided into 114 parts just like the surah (chapters) in the Al Quran and it will become the largest tourism and Al Quran learning destination in the world," he added.
Shaary said he was confident the local government would offer land for the project and funding would not be problem.
"What is important is the green light from the government," Shaary said.
