Man charged for ‘spiderman’ cruise ship stunt
A man has been charged with offences related to an attempt to unlawfully access a cruise ship in a bizarre stunt that went viral.
The 29-year old shimmied the mooring lines which were tethering the Carnival Adventure cruise ship at Sydney Harbor.
Video footage of the incident on Saturday went viral online.
The man slowly made his way towards the ship suspended over the water for some time.
A New South Wales police boat was called to try and talk him down.
Eventually, port crew loosened the mooring lines which lowered the man into the police boat where he was grabbed by police officers.
He was whisked off to Day Street Police Station for questioning and was arrested.
He has been charged with unauthorized entry in a restricted zone.
“Following reports a man had attempted to climb onto a cruise ship via a mooring line, police attached to Marine Area Command found the man suspended over the water,” a NSW Police statement said.
“The line was lowered onto a police boat, before the man was arrested”.
The incident attracted a large crowd of onlookers at the harbor.
The man’s stunt seems to have divided social media.
Some praised his agility, calling him the new ‘spiderman’ while for others, it was an ‘idiotic stunt.’
He is due to attend a first court hearing next month.
