Man shot by police as he tried to storm airport security with a machete
A machete-wielding man, who was shot by police as he tried to storm a checkpoint at New Orleans international airport on Friday, has died from his wounds in hospital.
The man, who is said to have mental health problems, was shot three times by an officer as he threatened a security worker with the knife just after attacking another with spray.
After the incident, police found petrol bombs in his bag and smoke bombs in his car which was parked near the airport.
Richard White, 63, was treated for leg, chest and face wounds in hospital, but died on Saturday afternoon.
A female security agent was hurt by a stray bullet.
There were chaotic scenes at the airport as the incident unfolded and travellers heard the gun shots.
Farah Stockman, a journalist for the Boston Globe who was in the airport at the time, tweeted: “Lots of terrified people. Women crying. Someone apparently fell down and that created panic. Cops ran in, creating more panic.
“A knife was lying by the body. A woman (maybe tsa agent?) in blue had been lightly stabbed. Another guy appeared to have been nicked, too.”
“People had heard gunshots. Everyone was hiding behind chairs and in doorways. Made our way to exit. Body was lying in a pool of blood.”
