Marriott has reopened all China hotels

Marriott International says it has reopened all its hotels in China.

CEO Arne Sorenson said the travel recovery is continuing apace across China, with occupancy rates edging up to about 40% from a low of 7% in February.

"It’s not just leisure travel growing, but it is business travel. Chinese are flying again," Sorenson said at a Goldman Sachs conference.

The company has been discounting and offering gift card promotions across China to help boost business.

Sorenson also said there has been a gradual improvement for Marriott hotels across the US.

Occupancy is at about 20%, which is up from a low of 12% a few weeks ago.

However there is still a long road ahead to a full recovery.

"Crossing over the 20% occupancy for the portfolio as a whole is a meaningful improvement from where we were before, but it is a long way from where we need to get to."

The (US) hotels that are performing strongest are those that are most dependent on drive to business," Sorensen said.
