Mate, this feels just like Bondi

LONDON – It was probably just as well that the sun was shining brightly in London yesterday, otherwise Australian tourism’s attempt to make the Thames Embankment look like Bondi beach would have looked a little silly.

The occasion was the installation of a pristine white sand beach to celebrate a new initiative from Australia called G’dayUK, which aims to bring a little bit of ‘Down Under’ to the UK.

G’dayUK runs from until the end of the month and comprises Australian-themed activities designed to showcase the best Australia has to offer in terms of lifestyle, culture, food and wine and business opportunities.

The beach, complete with lifeguards, deck chairs and surfboards is located at Observation Point on the River Thames, overlooking iconic London landmarks, including St Paul’s Cathedral.

Phil Aiken, chairman of G’dayUK, said, “With temperatures in London set to outstrip those in Australia today, ‘Bondi-on-Thames’ is definitely the best place to be.”

The promotion includes a CEO forum together with food and wine shows.
