Mauritian flash floods kill 11 people
Mauritius is preparing for further floods after at least 11 people were killed in the island’s capital of Port Louis.
Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared April 1 a day of mourning after flash floods saw people being washed along the roads by floodwaters and cars overturned.
Torrential downpours hit Port Louis with some 152 mm of rain falling in less than two hours on Saturday, the meteorological office reported. It warned there could be more storms.
Officials blamed climate change for the disaster that has left hundreds homeless in Port Louis.
The Foreign and Commonwealth office website said: "Heavy rain is forecast to continue and further flash flooding is possible. You should be cautious along any riverbanks and water courses including storm drains."
