Men rescued after boat damaged by shark attacks
Three men in a small catamaran had a lucky escape after being attacked by sharks in a remote area of the Pacific.
They were rescued hundreds of miles off the Australia coast after the 29-feet catamaran was badly damaged by sharks.
Two Russians and a French national were sailing from Vanuatu to Cairns.
They let off a distress beacon and were eventually rescued by a cargo ship sent to help.
The beacon ‘absolutely saved their lives.’
The Australia marine safety agency received the distress signal and sent a Panama-flagged ship to help
The catamaran had ‘large sections of its hull missing’ after repeated shark attacks.
The sailors, who were rescued unharmed, are expected to arrive in Brisbane on Thursday.
The expedition was retracing explorers of the 19th century.
The voyage was planned to mark with the 250th anniversary of the birth of Adam Johann von Krusenstern, the first Russian on a round-the-world voyage.
It planned to sail to 40 countries before sailing back to St. Petersburg.
