Mexican airline grounds Russian made aircraft for safety checks
Mexican budget carrier Interjet said it had to cancel about 25 holiday flights to conduct mandatory safety checks on its fleet of Russian made Superjet 100.
Authorities in Russia issued the directive after cracks were found in one of the Sukhoi planes.
Interjet cancelled 25 flights affecting nearly 700 passengers.
It is has one of the largest fleets of the new Superjet 100 aircraft.
It stems from the recent crash of a Tupelov-154 plane carrying military personnel, although contrary to an original statement issued in Mexico, the Superjet 100 is a completely different plane.
Its Superjets meet ‘the highest standards of security’ the airline said in a statement.
