Mexico drawing visitors in record numbers
Mexico had a historic high of 20.5 million international visitors in 2004, up from 18.6 million in 2003.
That number was also a half million more than the government had set as its target for last year, according to the Tourism Secretariat (Sectur).
Sectur expects visitors to exceed 21.5 million this year.
The record-breaking numbers reinforces Mexico’s position as one of the world’s top ten world tourist attractions. Mexico ranks eighth in the world in its number of international visitors.
Numbers of cruise ship visitors were also up. Sectur figures showed a 17.7% increase in numbers for 2004 over 2003.
Tourists from Mexico’s North American neighbors represent more than 90% of the country’s international tourism market. Almost 90% of visitors come from the US, and 2.8% from Canada. The European market represents 4.3%, while Latin America is 2.9%, according to Sectur.
