MICE market speeding up in Indy
Perhaps best-known for its auto racing, Indianapolis is about to also become famous for another reason: it is about to emerge as one of the US’s top 20 largest convention center complexes.
The city will soon have 3.4 million square feet of exhibit and meeting space (combining the new Lucas Oil Stadium and the expanded Indiana Convention Center).
The combined new space will make the Indiana Convention Center the nation’s 16th largest. It currently is 32nd.
What is driving growth? In part, location, say CVB officials.
The city is within one day’s drive of more than half of the nation’s population. The airport is only 15 minutes from downtown.
The Convention Center is located in the heart of Indianapolis’ revitalized downtown, connected by skywalks to eight hotels, 3,200 rooms and Circle Centre shopping and entertainment complex with more than 100 stores, shops and restaurants.
There are also 50 major attractions, 200 restaurants within walking distance of the convention center with more than 27 hotels also underway, according to Meetings Media.
"It is almost as if a planner planned the city of Indianapolis," Michelle Travis, vice president of sales for the Indianapolis CVA, told Meetings Media.
