Mini Beast from the East forecast sparks warning of travel delays
The Met Office has warned more Baltic weather this weekend will cause a ‘fair amount of disruption to transport’.
This afternoon, forecasters upgraded weather warnings in some parts of the country to amber, saying: "Delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely."
Forecasters says up to 20cm (8in) of snow will fall in some areas this weekend when severe weather, dubbed the Mini Beast from the East, returns.
Snow is already falling in the Grampian mountains in Scotland and the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for snow and ice from 3pm this afternoon in many parts of the country, including north-eastern Scotland, central and eastern parts of England.
The snow will spread on Saturday.
Nearly the whole of England and parts of Wales will be under a yellow snow warning on Sunday., with amber warnings in London, the South East, East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber.
After yesterday’s high of nearly 16C, much of Britain this weekend will have near-freezing temperatures, the Met Office has said.
A spokesperson for Gatwick Airport said: "Given the potential for the weather to deteriorate this weekend passengers are strongly advised to check with their airline for the latest flight information before leaving for the airport.
"If travelling to the airport, passengers should also allow extra time for their journey."
