Mobile bookings to surge 60 percent in 2014

The volume of travel transactions taking place on smartphones and tablets is set to rise almost 60% this year according to a new report.

A new eMarketer report says mobile bookings account for only 18% of all digital travel sales currently, but it is the main driver of growth in the sector.

The report confirms the common knowledge that smartphones are typically used by travelers on the go to book last minute hotel stays, flights or car rentals.

It shows that tablets are increasingly being used as the primary device at home and are replacing desktop and laptop computers.

The report says consumers are increasingly likely to book high value family vacations in advance and longer business trips on their tablets as opposed to their PCs.

US m-commerce travel sales volume on tablets and smartphones was $16.36 billion in 2013 and will surge 59.8% this year to $26.14 billion.

Almost 29% of all consumer transactions on mobile in the US are for travel products and this will rise to a 32.8% share of a $200 billion m-commerce market by 2018.
