More disruption at Australian airports
There’s more frustration ahead for airline passengers in Australia with Customs and quarantine staff stopping work across the country today.
Thousands of staff at airports and ports were expected to stop work for between one and two hours to attend meetings on a new pay agreement.
The latest industrial action at Australia’s airports follows disruption of Qantas flights last week by members of the Transport Workers Union.
The TWU is planning another one-hour stoppage by 3,800 baggage handlers, ground staff, and other Qantas employees on Friday this week.
Qantas Group executive Olivia Wirth said the airline was assessing what impact this industrial action will have on flights and what contingency measures can be used to minimise impacts on passengers.
“This is one of our busiest weekends of the year with tens of thousands of people travelling around Australia for the football and for the school holidays on Friday alone. The union knows this and they are trying to cause maximum disruptions to passengers,†Wirth said.
“These strikes hold passengers to ransom but don’t help the TWU get any closer to an agreement.â€
