More Mickey Mouse security for TSA?

Saturday, 07 Feb, 2011 0

It may have a long way to go before replacing pat-downs but Israeli scientists are testing a detector that looks like a full body-scanner that operates with eight hidden mice, according to New Scientist magazine.

The mice are fitted into concealed cartridges and work four-hour shifts.

Researchers say the mice are more accurate in detecting bombs than either dogs or x-ray machines.

When the mice sense traces of bombs, they run to a side chamber where they trigger an alarm, according to the magazine.

“It’s as if they’re smelling a cat and escaping. We detect the escape,” said Eran Lumbroso, an inventor who says he hopes to have a larger version of the device eventually installed at airports.
