More travel companies support sustainable tourism charity
Cosmos and Virgin Holidays have become the latest operators to sign up in support of sustainable tourism charity the Travel Foundation.
And, as the charity marks its first anniversary, Thomas Cook, has stepped up its commitment by seeking a £1 voluntary donation per booking from customers booking Thomas Cook Tour Operating holidays through third party agents.
Cosmos will be asking customers to donate £1 for every booking made from October.
Virgin Holidays has pledged a corporate donation of £25,000 to support the work of the Travel Foundation.
The charity has also secured fundraising support from guidebook publisher Chakula Press in its first non-tour operator partnership. The company will make a contribution from sales of a new book about Andalucia.
Travel Foundation director Sue Hurdle said the charity was on target to receive £300,000 this year. It has secured pledges for about twice that amount for 2005 and is on track to reach a target of raising £1 million a year by 2006.
Ms Hurdle said: “One year on from our trade launch, it’s clear the industry is embracing the issues of sustainable tourism and is really starting to open up to a new way of caring for, and therefore protecting, the places we all love to visit.
“I would also appeal for more travel companies to make a commitment to working together to develop practical solutions to safeguard the resources on which the travel industry’s future depends.”
