Morehead City, here we come
The sleepy town of Morehead City is about to get a jolt of high-end tourists.
The North Carolina beach resort, never a cruise ship stop before, is among 71 new destinations just released by luxury line Silversea Cruises for its 2015 itineraries.
The Silver Shadow will embark on April 3 on a brand new itinerary, sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with calls in Savannah, Charleston, Morehead City, and Norfolk (also a new destination) along the Atlantic coast, plus Bermuda and Nassau.
In total, Silversea’s eight elite ships will sail on 276 voyages, visiting more than 700 destinations on seven continents.
New ports in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions include Huelva, San Antonio (Ibiza), and Alcúdia (Mallorca), Spain; Rethymnon (Crete) and Igoumenitsa, Greece; Santa Maria di Leuca, Italy; and Amasra, Turkey.
In Asia and the Pacific, new ports include Haikou, China; Hambantota, Sri Lanka; Bintulu, Malaysia; Savusavu, Fiji; Lifou Island, New Caledonia; and the Philippines’ Bohol Island, Boracay Island, Busuanga Island, and Hundred Islands.
And in Africa and the Indian Ocean, new ports are Luanda, Angola and Mahajanga, Madagascar.
Expedition Cruises will offer dozens of new destinations, such as the remote Phoenix Islands Protected Area in Kiribati, which includes Nikumaroro, the island some believe to be the final resting place of famed aviator Amelia Earhart, and Congo’s exotic Pointe Noire, renowned for its beautiful beaches and the spectacular red rock cliffs at Diosso Gorge.
The Morehead City website offers visitors "a most cordial welcome to Morehead City, the gem of the Crystal Coast of North Carolina! Morehead City, the largest town in Carteret County, enjoys a temperate climate and has ready access to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world!"
