Morocco ups UK advertising spend and promotes more destinations

The Moroccan National Tourist Office is increasing UK advertising spend in 2008 as part of its strategy to widen the number of destinations it promotes.

The planned investment for the 2008 print, poster and television campaign is 2.5 million Euros – a 20% increase on 2007.

MNTO director of markets Rachid Maaninou said the campaign would promote the diversity of a number of destinations within the country including Fez, Agadir and Marrakech.

He added that the campaign would not talk about the new Saidia resort yet because the first four hotels including Barcelo and Iberostar properties are not scheduled for completion until May.

The Saidia resort, which is one of six new resorts being developed in the next five years, is part of Morocco’s 2010 Vision programme to increase visitors to 10 million.

UK visitors to Morocco increased 37% to 376,000 in the first nine months of 2007 compared with the same period in 2006 making it the fastest growing tourist market for the second year running. The MNTO is targeting 670,000 UK visitors by 2010.

The destination has also signed an agreement with the Travel Foundation to jointly develop a sustainability plan for Morocco.
