Mt Merapi blows its top again

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi volcano has erupted again, with greater force than last week’s eruptions in which 36 people died.

Merapi, which straddles four districts in Central Java and Yogyakarta, has seen marathon eruptions since October 26.

Airlines have been warned to avoid certain routes over Yogyakarta and Central Java as Mount Merapi continues to belch dangerous hot ash high into the air.

Malaysia-based AirAsia cancelled four flights linking Kuala Lumpur with Yogyakarta and nearby Solo on Tuesday. Silk Air has taken two flights between Singapore and Solo off the schedule.

The danger zone around Mt Merapi has been widened from six miles to nine miles (10 to 15 kilometers) from the peak because of the heightened threat.

Witnesses said lava and burning rocks as well as hot ash were shooting from its crater for several hours.

An estimated 75,000 people have been evacuated from the area.

Local officials told the BBC’s Indonesian service that funding for aid for refugees will run out in five days if a national disaster is not declared.
