Murder of British tourist prompts Cape Town travel warning

Cape Town is urging visitors to be cautious following the murder last week of a British bride who was visiting South Africa on her honeymoon.

Authorities in the Western Cape, one of South Africa’s tourist hotspots, said visitors should be vigilant.

A spokesman for the Western Cape Provincial Management said: “We would like to issue a stern warning to visitors in our province, and locals alike, to exercise caution and be vigilant when entering an unfamiliar area and always be prepared for potential danger.”

Anni Dewani, 28 from Bristol, and her husband of two weeks Shrien Dewani, 30, were returning to their hotel in Cape Town on Saturday after a night out when their taxi was ambushed by armed men.

Reports in the press over the weekend said the hijackers forced the driver out of the car and drove off with the couple. They later dumped Mr Dewani out of the car but drove off with his wife.

Her body was found on Sunday morning the back seat of the car, which was abandoned at short distance from where Mr Dewani was thrown from the vehicle.

It is believed the couple had been to a function in the Winelands area on the outskirts of Cape Town.
