Naples tourists to get police protection
Visitors to the Italian city of Naples are reportedly to be offered police protection because of the threat posed by gangs of teenagers.
The Daily Telegraph states that juvenile crime in the city is soaring, with reports of tourists being beaten and robbed. Tourist numbers have reportedly started to fall, with restaurants locking their doors and offering customers lifts to and from their hotels.
The city’s “prefect”, Renato Profili, is quoted as saying: “We have 140 police patrols on duty and available at any one time. If a tourist group decides to leave a hotel and visit a certain site, it seems only right for police to be told, in order to keep an eye on them and ensure they have no ugly surprises.”
Tourists have also been warned that they should not wear expensive watches or carry other valuable goods.
